Sri Lanka is an island in the middle of the Indian ocean, where (except for some islands) there is no land further south to be found until the continent of Antarctic of the southern most end of the globe. Sri Lanka lies attached to the greatest continent that is Asia near the tip of the Indian subcontinent. The surrounding ocean is filled with corrals, fish, dolphins and other marine life. Ships and boats, both great and small drift across towards either the far east or to the west across this vast empty sea, carrying crews from different far away lands. The island itself is a serendipity for the sailors, with its lush vegetation , sandy beaches, many winding rivers and misty inland mountains. This is where the background and history of Lanka begins.
The history of the peoples of this island dates back centuries if not millenniums. This can be derived from the tales and literature of the Lankan people as well as those of visitors and outsiders. Adding to these sources are the material Archaeological evidences which are constantly emerging from the earth. In this blog we shall investigate most of these evidences in an attempt to find introduce real Sri Lankan tradition to the children of Sri Lanka who live away, abroad.
Children of those who left Sri Lanka and living in many different countries of the world are many and increasing. These children have only a little knowledge of their parents' mother tongue and little knowledge of the history of Lanka, the country of their origin. It is thus the purpose of this blog to provide them with an easy to understand resource of history of Lanka. The objective of this effort is to create awareness and appreciation of Sri Lanka in their minds. If any person gains some understanding from this blog that is the greatest reward which we expect.
